Asphalt Paving

ASPHALT as defined by Webster's New World Dictionary, is a black or brown tar like substance mixed with sand or gravel and used for paving or roofing. When defined in the practical sense, asphalt is the black covering that fills holes and makes roads smoother, eliminates mud in parking lots and makes very attractive driveways. Also, when applied in a professional manner, asphalt is the black substance laid on flat areas that increases the value of a home or piece of land.

Among the more noticeable asphalt projects completed by R&R recently is the large parking lot at the Michael Medical Clinic in Moorefield, WV. The new asphalt and bright line striping on the parking area in front of the facility greatly compliments the new medical complex located directly behind the Wellness Center and Hardy County Health Department. Additionally, R&R has blacktopped numerous private driveways, church and cemetery parking lots, apartment complex parking areas, U.S. Postal Service parking lots and private roadways throughout Grant, Hardy, Hampshire and Pendleton Counties.


When a couple was ready to leave their fast-paced life of computer engineering in Silicone Valley, CA, their quest was for an unclouded future with the opportunity to live life in a peaceful, uncomplicated way. Along the way, the couple stopped in the tradition-rich South Branch Valley area of Hardy County, West Virginia, an area called home by earlier family members.

Settling in West Virginia meant building a house that would become a real home, not just a dwelling. The couple settled into a small garage that became living quarters while construction plans were agreed upon. The removal of an old house no longer suitable for living and preparing the land marked the next step into their future. "We needed someone we could trust," the gentleman said. Their decision to hire R&R Contracting and Paving, LLC of Moorefield has been a rewarding experience for both parties. "We couldn't be happier with the work they've done for us. We're becoming old friends", he added. Trust, born out of respect for each other, extended well beyond clearing the land for the couple's new home. "We needed someone who could handle all the work we knew had to be done, but the actual work was something we knew nothing about. We turned to Greg and Jim and their crew, and we couldn't be happier."

Shortly after the couple moved into their new home, seasonal rains came and something had to be done before winter set in to correct the mud situation. The asphalt paving side of R&R Contracting and Paving went to work and the large driveway, nearly wide enough for three vehicles, was covered with stone and asphalt laid to enable easy access to and from the new home. To protect the integrity of the property and for the practical purpose of keeping sloped hillsides from falling into the driveway, Greg Riggleman, co-owner of R&R and his brother Jim Riggleman, a heavy equipment operator and foreman of one of the construction crews, were consulted about erecting a locked block retaining wall that would not only serve to hold back graded slopes but would also blend in with the natural beauty of the rural setting. Hundreds of blocks that were locked together, curved blocks, angled blocks and caps giving an unique terraced climb along the length of the driveway to the attached garage area of the home completed the construction process and turned the otherwise boring hillside into an attractive and safely functional approach to the couple's beautiful, new home.

Clearing, excavating and grading the land for home construction, turning mud into an asphalt-covered driveway, and building an aesthetic approach to a home was the work for which R&R Contracting and Paving had been hired to complete. Along the way, new acquaintances became old friends.
